KOTF 12: The Dakota Unity Ride

This episode of Keepers of the Flame is perhaps our most important show to date in terms of its message. It focuses on the Unity Ride and their travels in 2013 through Connecticut, as well as the Corn Festival in Beacon NY, on their way to the United Nations. The story of the return of Alfred Afraid of Hawk's remains is also featured. As so many people have come together in donating video for this show, there will be two shows later to cover both stories. This is a story that must be told, and must be heard. The 2013 ride is one of four, and they will return to Connecticut in 2014.

ABOUT THE UNITY RIDE
"We are trying to reconcile, unite, and make peace with everyone . . . to be Dakota means to walk in peace and harmony with every living thing"
~ Lakota spiritual leader, Jim Miller.

The First Nation Dakota People of Manitoba Canada are brought their Unity Riders to New York and Connecticut this past July and August. They rode to spread a message of peace and healing throughout the entire world. This epic journey covered thousands of miles from Canada to New York State, reaching millions of people. The riders arrived in Albany on July 27 where they for the first time in history, united with the East Coast Nations. They joined the Two Row Renewal Campaign for opening ceremonies and traveled together down the Hudson Valley on land and river. The Haudenousaunee launched their canoes the following day as the horses made their way overland. Many communities along the river hosted events giving the public an opportunity to meet these great ambassadors of peace and join them in celebration. Their journey culminated in NYC at the United Nations on August 9 where the International Code for Sacred Sites was presented.

Update: New Shows are Coming!

NEW SHOWS
While the old shows are being re-edited/reformatted and some new material has been added, two new ones are in process right now. Our first new show of 2013 was the Zanoni Silverknife interview, the next two new ones feature The Unity Ride and Wendy Rule. The new shows are more complex, and take much longer to edit and piece together, fusing music, video footage, and photography together. All this is being done on limited studio time, and most of my learning of the software is being done on the fly. With this and thanks to the new camcorder, shows will continue to improve. The shows take an enormous amount of work, as well as the cooperation and skill of many others beyond our little team. Some are contributing for future shows already. Please be patient, as my own personal health issues will take time to resolve, and they have been holding me back on this as well as other projects.

CONTRIBUTE TO OUR SHOW

KOTF 11: Margot Adler Lecture: Changes in the Pagan Movement

Rev. Alicia Lyon Folberth, Ashmera, Margot Adler
Margot Adler Lecture: Changes in the Pagan Movement, What's new, What's Different
In  the last  15 years, the pagan movement has grown so that now scholars are saying there are at least a million contemporary Pagans worldwide, and perhaps three quarters of that number are in the US. That would be 750 thousand, and what with charities, prison ministries, seminaries, kid friendly festivals, teen groups, 5000 pagan websites, numerous festivals, several of over 1000 people there are so many changes to talk about, not only what they are but what they mean for our movement and our community.

ABOUT MARGOT ADLER (Bio from Wikipedia)
(Margot Adler (born 16 April 1946 in Little Rock, Arkansas) is a journalist and correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR).
Adler received a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's degree from the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University in New York in 1970, and she was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 1982. She grew up mostly in New York City and worked for WBAI, FM 99.5, the Pacifica Radio outlet in that city. She created the talk shows Hour of the Wolf in 1972 (and still on the air as hosted by Jim Freund) and later Unstuck in Time.
Adler joined NPR in 1979 as a general assignment reporter, and has since worked on a great many pieces dealing with subjects as diverse as the death penalty, the right to die movement, the response to the war in Kosovo, computer gaming, the drug ecstasy, geek culture, children and technology, and Pokémon. Since 9/11, she has focused much of her work on stories exploring the human factors in New York City, from the loss of loved ones, homes and jobs, to work in the relief effort. She is presently the host of Justice Talking, and she is a regular voice on Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
Adler wrote Drawing Down the Moon: Witches, Druids, Goddess-Worshippers, and Other Pagans in America Today. This book is considered a watershed in American Neopagan circles, as it provided the first comprehensive look at the nature-based religions in the US, and became what was for many the first point of contact with the larger subculture. She was a speaker at the 1986 WinterStar Symposium, from which the Association for Consciousness Exploration produced her lecture tape From Witch to Witch-Doctor: Healers, Therapists and Shamans and the panel discussion The Magickal Movement: Present and Future (with Isaac Bonewits, Selena Fox, and Robert Anton Wilson). Her second book, Heretic's Heart: A Journey Through Spirit and Revolution, was published by Beacon Press in 1997. Adler is a Wiccan priestess of the Gardnerian Wicca tradition.
Her grandfather, Alfred Adler, is considered the father of individual psychology.

"The natural beauty of the flute evokes very powerful emotions. The traditional flute is social, not ceremonial, in nature and should always be treated with that in mind and spirit."
-Joseph FireCrow

Joseph Fire Crow is a Cheyenne flutist. In 1992, Fire Crow recorded the album, The Mist. Two years later, in 1994, he released a second self-produced recording, Rising Bird. These recordings were once sold only at concerts. Within 5 years of producing the first CD, Joseph got his first award and it has not stopped.

"The very first time I heard the flute, I was a young boy living on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation located in southeastern Montana. Grover Wolfvoice was the flute man playing this wonderful music. The music was beautiful to my ears, yet it scared me. There was much poverty and depression at that time. The sound of the flute touched my heart, where there was much pain and uncertainty. Through all of the hardships of reservation life, the beauty and wonder of our homeland beckoned to me."
-Joseph FireCrow

The music of the native American Flute has great meaning- it touches the soul. Joe FireCrow has opened a world of tradition with his artistry in building and playing the flute. His flutes are reviving the art of flute playing for a new generation.

The Northern Cheyenne wooden flute is a flourishing tradition. The songs of the flute are called "wolf songs." The love, passion, and affection can be heard and experienced when FireCrow, plays his flute or sings one of the ancient songs of his people. His performances are highly educational, with a strong message of love and respect for all human beings.

ABOUT LADY TAMARRA JAMES
Tamarra was initiated as a witch on her 16th birthday, way back when people did that. But her big learning curve happened after she moved with her new husband Richard from Vancouver to Los Angeles. That city in 1977 was a hotbed of competing approaches and personalities; and it was there that R&T formed their first coven. Their wandering took them to New York, where competition among traditions was just as intense, and they learned all they could. Finally in 1979 they moved back to Canada, to Toronto.
In 1979 they opened The Occult Shop on Queen St, with a temple space in the back, and on the night of their first ritual a brick smashed through the shop window. The resulting press attention helped the business succeed. Since then, many other Pagan retailers have come and gone, but The Occult Shop lives on.
People who came to the shop demanded a Church, where they could worship openly like people of other religions, so they formed the Wiccan Church of Canada with R&T as their first priest & priestess. Since then, R&T have watched the Canadian pagan community grow, being involved in the first prison ministry, the first Pagan festival, the first Pagan conference, introducing Ontario Pagans to Americans and vice versa.
For 30 years, they have watched or been part of every aspect of the growth of the Ontario Pagan Community. Tamarra's women's group Sistrum is 26 years old. In the last few years, Richard has broadened the horizons to work for the Canadian National Pagan Conference.

ABOUT KATRIN ROUSH
Ever the hard worker, Katrin is about to reach a new level. She built esteem through three albums produced in the Boston area, but her new record was made in Woodstock and marks a quantum leap into the national spotlight. Katrin was helped by a Woodstock-based dream team of drummer/producer Jerry Marotta (Peter Gabriel, Hall & Oates, Paul McCartney, Sheryl Crow), bassist Tony Levin (John Lennon, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson), guitarist/harp player John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful), and guitarist Bill Dillon (McCartney, Robbie Robertson, Sheryl Crow, King Crimson).
"I have more of a sense of being decisive and more confidence in myself,'' she says, noting it's the first time she has worked with such heavyweights. "I'm being even more fearless.''

ABOUT LAURA POWERS
Laura’s long-time fascination with Celtic mythology led her to create the “Legends of the Goddess” trilogy (Legends of the Goddess, Beyond the Pale: Legends of the Goddess II, and Trilogy: Legends of the Goddess III) which features musical themes based on the Celtic goddess of ancient myth. Enhanced by instrumentation such as tin whistle, uilleann pipes and Irish flute, the influence of European pop can be heard throughout the records and lyrically, it is the metaphysical/mythological aspect of Celtic legends that is the central focus. In addition, Powers utilized her gifts as a painter to create the original cover art on all three CDs, melding the lyrical imagery with her oil paintings to present a timeless collection of music and art. http://www.laurapowers.com/

ABOUT SHAMAN STARSEED
Brahm Stuart & Catalina Colibri
Born in Panama, raised in New Orleans and Mississippi, B. Stuart mastered the Celtic fiddle the old way, in the pubs and forests of Ireland, from both human and elven masters. In the nineties, he led Celtic-Folk/Earth-Music group, SHAMAN, that recorded 5 albums and played at many venues including the United Nations, Starwood music festival, Earth Day and Renaissance Festivals, political rallies, benefits and witches balls. Other credits include many on-stage performances alongside many great musicians including Rick Danko, Jorma Kaukonen, Paul Winter, Glen Velez, The Wolftones and Alan Stivell. He was an original member of the Celtic rock band, The Clan, and performed with the Italian folk music group, I Guillari di Piazza for over 12 years. A master performer on accoustic guitar, fiddle, voice, percussion and tin whistle in several folk traditions. At present, Brahm and Catalina (harp, energy and percussion) are the core members of the Mystic Minstrels.
Born and raised in New York City, Catalina is a third generation musician; her father was the principal timbales player in the world famous bolero/salsa group, Trio de San Juan. She started playing guitar and percussion from an early age, and later fell in love with Irish mythology and Celtic harp which she studied beginning in the mid nineties. She has now been playing Celtic harp professionally for over 10 years, both with the Minstrels and as a solo harpist. On percussion, Catalina plays bodhran (Irish framedrum) and Middle Eastern framedrum and is quite accomplished in authentic Italian tambourine styles as well. Catalina has performed at many prestigious events, galas and weddings with performances at the Cloisters Museum in New York City, Caramoor Center for Music Arts in Katonah, NY, Metropolitan Museum, The University Club and Gracie Mansion in New York City. Catalina has recorded two solo harp albums, Mystical Journey and The Trees of Pan on the Solstar Communications label.

KOTF 3: Interview with Lady Zanoni Silverknife

Interview with Lady Zanoni Silverknife by Rev. Alicia Lyon Folberth
Educational Piece on Raising the Power
Music and concert footage from Wendy Rule, Wyld Olde Souls, and Omnia
Will air in the Valley March 29th, Comcast channel 10, 9pm

ABOUT ZANONI SILVERKNIFE
Zanoni Silverknife is the first Georgian Priestess. In late December 1971, she along with her best friend Tanith, joined with George Patterson to start the "Georgian" Tradition. It is a tradition that seems to have many tributaries today, but also has maintained at least three Traditionalist branches. For the Silverknife Line, Zanoni has created a solid structure for training proper persons in the three degree system and has maintained the true core of the Georgian Tradition for posterity. She has also created a Core Book of Shadows from several Georgian Initiates Books in order to capture as much of Patterson's Book as possible, his being lost to Georgians after his death.
Zanoni is Elder in several other Wiccan (Gardnerian, NECTW, 1734) and Pagan traditions such as NRDNA and enjoys the variety and uniqueness from such a mélange. She is always moving, growing, learning and refining herself and her life. Along with continuing to teach in both Craft and Nordic ways, she manages a budding art career and writes many stories for her grandchildren. She is also working on several books, some for publication, some that will only be dispersed to Traditional Georgian Elders or StarBornSothis Initiates.
She is a charter member of COG (Covenant of the Goddess,) and has helped to facilitate many public circles, and worked diligently in any number of organizations for pagans, such as ERCA (Earth Religions Cultural Association.) In her travels, Zanoni has brought the Craft to many people across the United States. She continues to be a vital force for the Craft and her beloved Gods and Goddesses.

About Maxine Sanders:
After thirty-five years actively teaching in training covens Maxine recognizes that the Inner circles of the Craft’s priesthood's have evolved significantly since her Initiation into the Priesthood of Witchcraft in the early sixties!Part of this evolution has involved the Craft becoming widely available to seekers. For many years Maxine had declined to talk publicly about her path; she now feels that times are more conducive to continue her vocation in a more public arena. To this end, Maxine will talk to preferably gentle pagan audiences. Her extensive experience of the Craft gives a unique, poignant and often humorous take on her magical life and practices.  http://www.maxinesanders.co.uk

Note from Lady Maxine Sanders, who gave us the following to be posted from our correspondence:

Regardless of the days of seemingly endless media attention,  the way of the hermit, the working of the magic and the maintaining of the sacred is my chosen path. The public arena is not my forte, hence the rarity of my public appearances. Nowadays I endeavor to make my talks humorous and yet poignant reminding the Craft priesthood of the sanctity of their magic and worship. On having this 'YouTube' talk pointed out to me I was rather surprised to see it in such a public arena; on re appraisal it would seem that the magic will have its way regardless of my reluctance to be part of  modern media.
' preserving the sacred means permitting others to know it even exists,  the sacred is a quieter voice that tends to be drowned out by the louder profane'.
Please be assured that this particular edited release, 'Initiation' has my full consent.
I respect the work of The Panthean Temple trusting the sacred is treasured by the priesthood within its realm.
Blessed Be
Maxine Sanders

Song of the Week:
The Wild Hunt by Tamarra James from Carpe Noctum

“Haunting tales, ghostly singing and strange lights.” Is how one reviewer described Legend’s debut CD. Released in 1991 this album captured the essence of the songs, but due to technical issues did not really reflect the sound the band was aiming for. Nonetheless it did receive a lot of critical acclaim in the ‘Prog’ scene press at the time and ultimately led to a Licensing deal from Apollon Records in Japan and a Publishing deal through Watanabe Music. The aforementioned deals set Legend up to continue to perform and record and thus develop their sound into the style they desired. Light in Extension was released in Japan in 1992 and sales very rapidly topped 10,000 copies.  Light in Extension is currently unavailable, though it is hoped a re-mastered version will be released at some point in the not too distant future. http://www.stevepaine.org/

We are now on Vimeo

We have a new domain for our professional video hosting on Vimeo :D
Got the one I wanted too. Need to convert the video file now...
http://keepersoftheflame.tv/

In my opinion, I do not recommend Blip.TV as their customer service has no interest in servicing its customers. They chose to delete our account without a specified reason under terms of service, likely because I complained loudly. I can't help but wonder if the subject matter also has something to do with it, although they seem to be okay with portraying modern witches alongside vampires as horror.

But Vimeo seems to be a better deal anyway, and without file size issues.

The shows will be edited one by one before they are placed on the internet - this will take time, as my studio time each week is also limited.

Help, Interviews, and Video Wanted for Keepers of the Flame

IN THE STUDIO:

We are about to start a new season with brand new equipment in the cable access TV studio. Our crew could use another hand going forward. The studio provides all training free of charge, which is required to work on the show. Training is on boards, recording decks, cameras, lights, set up and breakdown, and some light computer work. Once you are trained we will begin recording in the studio again, likely twice per month.

This is a volunteer position (no one gets paid), but it looks great on a resume. The studio is located in Seymour on Great Hill Road.

ADDITIONAL VIDEOS, MUSIC AND INTERVIEWS ACCEPTED

If you have music videos, video pieces, or interviews (from anywhere in the world) and would like to submit them to the show for broadcast, please submit them to us on DVD with a release to:

Panthean Temple
POB 111
Derby CT 06418

APPEARING ON THE SHOW:

Coming to our area? Please schedule an interview with us. Daytime in the studio during weekdays is usually available. If you are an Elder, author, leader, musical or visual artist we may want to speak with you. Sorry, but we are no longer accepting phone interviews unless they are videotaped on your end as well - you will have to make arrangements with us.

Please write us at PantheanTemple@aol.com if you are interested in any of the above

Blessings,
Rev. Alicia Lyon Folberth

Take Me Down Where the Pagans Go!

I have loved Adala's music from the first time I heard her sing an original song at a Pagan spiritualist church years ago. She has an amazing gift, and she's totally professional. the song for our show "Take Me Down Where the Pagans Go" is from her Dancing Naked CD, available from CD Baby. I think it's totally perfect for us and our show. Support her and buy a copy!

Kind words about her CD:

"Lovely Pagan-themed CD. Many of the songs would be good to use in Circle or as chants. Adala has an earthy, pleasant voice, great for this type of music, and she wrote all of the tracks herself."

"A true magical masterpiece. Her music will encircle you with the power and love of the Goddess. Her haunting voice sends chills up my spine each and every time I listen. An absolute must for your music library."

"Myth, magic, a pure sensory experience. The music on this cd is organically beautiful and intriguing. Each song holds a sense of mystery and invokes power. The vocals are amazing as well especially when they are overlayed with a mixture of harmony and chants. A must for anyone interested in truly magical music."

What's new?

I know so many of you have been quietly waiting for me to come back and step into the strong role of leading in the community once more. I've had multiple life issues, including recovering from a car accident and severe health issues which I am still in the process of working on, but I am returning to full service once more. Part of this is the television show, which began originally as a previous show that aired in many areas of Connecticut under the banner of the Panthean Temple.

Keepers of the Flame is truly now the Panthean Temple's show, and as its producer, I have full creative control. I wanted to create a show that would bring our spiritual traditions up to a platform that represents us well, and educates and enriches our own people as well as the general public. This first step of placing it on the internet is a giant step forward for us all. I have often felt that far too often, the wrong people choose to represent us in our communities publicly, so let that change begin with our small temple. I am seeking out the voices of of Elders, leaders, and authors that will be preserved for future generations, and bring our religions into the future. We are also undergoing something of a cultural renaissance as so many musicians, artists and writers lend their voice to our growing numbers, and are becoming successful doing so. No longer are we in the shadows, we must carry the torch for the sake of future generations.

Each show will be edited and added to the internet, one by one. Although I am a graphic designer, I am learning the new software to do video editing and animation. I also expect our little team will grow, as we add more talented people and combine talents with others who also have television shows.

Please consider donating to our temple so we can continue this work. Unless we have a generous benefactor, it will still be many years until we have land and a building. They are very expensive in the Fairfield and New Haven Counties. We rent land and buildings for festivals and rituals, and so much of our money over the years has gone to support others. I personally have supported it out of my own pocket for many years, and was no longer able to due so in a recession. Truly, I look forward to the day when our temple rests on the shoulders of many good people rather than squarely on my own. Help us make this dream a reality.

This blog is in the process of being created, as is the TV show, so pardon our appearance to start. The first episode should be available on the internet next week.

Many blessings,
Rev. Alicia Lyon Folberth
