KOTF 12: The Dakota Unity Ride

This episode of Keepers of the Flame is perhaps our most important show to date in terms of its message. It focuses on the Unity Ride and their travels in 2013 through Connecticut, as well as the Corn Festival in Beacon NY, on their way to the United Nations. The story of the return of Alfred Afraid of Hawk's remains is also featured. As so many people have come together in donating video for this show, there will be two shows later to cover both stories. This is a story that must be told, and must be heard. The 2013 ride is one of four, and they will return to Connecticut in 2014.

ABOUT THE UNITY RIDE
"We are trying to reconcile, unite, and make peace with everyone . . . to be Dakota means to walk in peace and harmony with every living thing"
~ Lakota spiritual leader, Jim Miller.

The First Nation Dakota People of Manitoba Canada are brought their Unity Riders to New York and Connecticut this past July and August. They rode to spread a message of peace and healing throughout the entire world. This epic journey covered thousands of miles from Canada to New York State, reaching millions of people. The riders arrived in Albany on July 27 where they for the first time in history, united with the East Coast Nations. They joined the Two Row Renewal Campaign for opening ceremonies and traveled together down the Hudson Valley on land and river. The Haudenousaunee launched their canoes the following day as the horses made their way overland. Many communities along the river hosted events giving the public an opportunity to meet these great ambassadors of peace and join them in celebration. Their journey culminated in NYC at the United Nations on August 9 where the International Code for Sacred Sites was presented.

NEW SHOWS
While the old shows are being re-edited/reformatted and some new material has been added, two new ones are in process right now. Our first new show of 2013 was the Zanoni Silverknife interview, the next two new ones feature The Unity Ride and Wendy Rule. The new shows are more complex, and take much longer to edit and piece together, fusing music, video footage, and photography together. All this is being done on limited studio time, and most of my learning of the software is being done on the fly. With this and thanks to the new camcorder, shows will continue to improve. The shows take an enormous amount of work, as well as the cooperation and skill of many others beyond our little team. Some are contributing for future shows already. Please be patient, as my own personal health issues will take time to resolve, and they have been holding me back on this as well as other projects.

CONTRIBUTE TO OUR SHOW
If you have music videos, video pieces, or interviews (from anywhere in the world) and would like to submit them to the show for broadcast, please submit them to us on DVD with a release to:

KOTF 11: Margot Adler Lecture: Changes in the Pagan Movement

Rev. Alicia Lyon Folberth, Ashmera, Margot Adler
Margot Adler Lecture: Changes in the Pagan Movement, What's new, What's Different
In  the last  15 years, the pagan movement has grown so that now scholars are saying there are at least a million contemporary Pagans worldwide, and perhaps three quarters of that number are in the US. That would be 750 thousand, and what with charities, prison ministries, seminaries, kid friendly festivals, teen groups, 5000 pagan websites, numerous festivals, several of over 1000 people there are so many changes to talk about, not only what they are but what they mean for our movement and our community.

ABOUT MARGOT ADLER (Bio from Wikipedia)
(Margot Adler (born 16 April 1946 in Little Rock, Arkansas) is a journalist and correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR).
Adler received a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's degree from the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University in New York in 1970, and she was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 1982. She grew up mostly in New York City and worked for WBAI, FM 99.5, the Pacifica Radio outlet in that city. She created the talk shows Hour of the Wolf in 1972 (and still on the air as hosted by Jim Freund) and later Unstuck in Time.
Adler joined NPR in 1979 as a general assignment reporter, and has since worked on a great many pieces dealing with subjects as diverse as the death penalty, the right to die movement, the response to the war in Kosovo, computer gaming, the drug ecstasy, geek culture, children and technology, and Pokémon. Since 9/11, she has focused much of her work on stories exploring the human factors in New York City, from the loss of loved ones, homes and jobs, to work in the relief effort. She is presently the host of Justice Talking, and she is a regular voice on Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
Adler wrote Drawing Down the Moon: Witches, Druids, Goddess-Worshippers, and Other Pagans in America Today. This book is considered a watershed in American Neopagan circles, as it provided the first comprehensive look at the nature-based religions in the US, and became what was for many the first point of contact with the larger subculture. She was a speaker at the 1986 WinterStar Symposium, from which the Association for Consciousness Exploration produced her lecture tape From Witch to Witch-Doctor: Healers, Therapists and Shamans and the panel discussion The Magickal Movement: Present and Future (with Isaac Bonewits, Selena Fox, and Robert Anton Wilson). Her second book, Heretic's Heart: A Journey Through Spirit and Revolution, was published by Beacon Press in 1997. Adler is a Wiccan priestess of the Gardnerian Wicca tradition.
Her grandfather, Alfred Adler, is considered the father of individual psychology.

"The natural beauty of the flute evokes very powerful emotions. The traditional flute is social, not ceremonial, in nature and should always be treated with that in mind and spirit."
-Joseph FireCrow

Joseph Fire Crow is a Cheyenne flutist. In 1992, Fire Crow recorded the album, The Mist. Two years later, in 1994, he released a second self-produced recording, Rising Bird. These recordings were once sold only at concerts. Within 5 years of producing the first CD, Joseph got his first award and it has not stopped.

"The very first time I heard the flute, I was a young boy living on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation located in southeastern Montana. Grover Wolfvoice was the flute man playing this wonderful music. The music was beautiful to my ears, yet it scared me. There was much poverty and depression at that time. The sound of the flute touched my heart, where there was much pain and uncertainty. Through all of the hardships of reservation life, the beauty and wonder of our homeland beckoned to me."
-Joseph FireCrow

The music of the native American Flute has great meaning- it touches the soul. Joe FireCrow has opened a world of tradition with his artistry in building and playing the flute. His flutes are reviving the art of flute playing for a new generation.

The Northern Cheyenne wooden flute is a flourishing tradition. The songs of the flute are called "wolf songs." The love, passion, and affection can be heard and experienced when FireCrow, plays his flute or sings one of the ancient songs of his people. His performances are highly educational, with a strong message of love and respect for all human beings.
